Artists’ Statement
My love affair with photography started at 12
with the gift of a Brownie Camera. After many years of
experience I seek to capture that
special moment in time. For this
I hike in the dark to sunrise locations, chase
snow storms, seek out quiet trails or
lonely beaches waiting for the changing light,
sky, waves or stormy weather, hoping for
that fleeting moment that I can share with
others. Using 5x7or 4x5 film I am able to
capture every minute detail. All the work
on my final images is done by myself, this
ensures that the finished work is exactly as I
saw and conceived it.
Biography
Born in England Shirley’s love of art and design
was fostered in High School. In her early
20’s Shirley explored Europe and Africa for 3
years. She worked in Morocco, crossed the
Sahara Desert, lived on a banana plantation in
the Cameroons, traveled the Belgian
Congo and Rwanda, Victoria Falls, climbed
Kilimanjaro and took the Nile steamer
through the Sudan and Egypt.
After moving to the US in 1965, she worked on a
BSc in Interior Design and Photography.
At a student competition at Santa Clara County
she won ‘Best of Show’ for a Black and
White image. After seeing the incredible
detail in a color print from a 4x5 camera she
decided to change her photographic style.
She has since had images hung at the
Center for Photographic Arts in Carmel, the
Morris Graves Museum of Art Eureka, the
Maritime Museum in Monterey, The Golden Oak
Gallery in Saratoga and also images in
Central Coast Magazine.
